On Monday, the Congress party announced its candidates for the byelections that will be held on June 30 for three legislative council seats in Karnataka. Jagadish Shettar, a former chief minister of Karnataka, was one of the three candidates announced by the party.
Tippannappa Kamaknoor, NS Boseraju, and Jagadish Shettar are the other members of the Congress party running in the MLC by-polls. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the southern state has not yet announced its candidates for the impending by-polls.
Laxman Savadi, Baburao Chinchansur, and R Shankar all resigned from their MLC positions prior to the assembly elections in Karnataka because the BJP had refused them seats in the polls.
One of the BJP leaders who left the party due to not receiving a ticket was the former chief minister Shettar. Later, after joining the Congress party, he was given a ticket from the Hubballi-Dharwad Central district.
The six-term MLA was defeated by Mahesh Tenginakai of the BJP in the assembly elections after receiving only 36.31 percent of the vote. He apparently received a significant position within the Congress party, which has since designated him as one of the MLC candidates.
Out of 224 constituencies, the Congress received 135 seats in the Karnataka assembly election results revealed in May, while the Bharatiya Janata Party received 66 seats. There were only 19 seats won by the Janata Dal (Secular).
