Rahul Gandhi: On his three-day tour of the US, Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi has continued to fire serious salvos of criticism at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking with members of the Indian Overseas Congress in Herndon, Virginia, Gandhi said that Modi’s declarations of strength and divine connection were things of the past. Referring to Modi’s infamous boast about his “56-inch chest” and his claims of a direct link with God, Gandhi said, “Modi ji’s 56-inch chest, the claim of having a direct connection with God, all that has now become history.”
Rahul Gandhi Criticizes BJP for Creating Atmosphere of Fear Post-Elections
Gandhi’s speech focused on the post-election environment in India, where he blamed the BJP for creating an atmosphere of fear and forcing small businesses through the actions of agencies. He said this fear vanished fast compared to how many years it took to create it, and underlined how the ground had shifted in the country’s politics. “Everything has changed in India after the elections,” said Gandhi, pointing to the decline in PM Modi’s earlier authoritative image.
Rahul Gandhi’s Firm Stand on Caste Census
Besides his attack on Modi, Gandhi stressed his caste census stand and called it an “unstoppable idea.” According to him, a full-fledged caste census, besides an economic and institutional survey, is needed for equity and justice. The relevant question is whether 90 percent of the population has any effective representation in the institutional framework-India’s economy, government, education,” Gandhi argued, making clear that nothing less than a wholesale examination of caste and its relationship to institutional representation would suffice.
Gandhi’s most recent comments have headlined newspapers and engendered debate-a testament to his continued commitment to questions of justice and fair representation within India.
