Jammu and Kashmir: Why are the two former chief ministers of the state ahead in making statements on Taliban

The whole world knows that the Taliban is a radical and violent organization. After his occupation of Afghanistan, the whole world fears that civil liberties and rights will be in danger. But two former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti and Farooq Abdullah are giving statements in support of Taliban.

Mehbooba Mufti said on Wednesday that the Taliban has now become a reality. He said the Taliban should rule Afghanistan under “real Sharia” law. Before her, Abdullah said that I hope that the Taliban government will follow the principles of Islam in Afghanistan and take care of human rights.

This statement of the two former chief ministers in support of the Taliban is being seen as an attempt to attract attention. Experts say that both the leaders are fighting for existence in Jammu and Kashmir and by making statements on Taliban, they are looking for excuses to discuss the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and draw the attention of the people of Kashmir towards them.

At the same time, one reason for this is also being told that the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has been unstable since its formation in October 2020 and they are unable to agree on most of the issues. In such a situation, this alliance formed against the Bharatiya Janata Party is losing its purpose.

After the alliance came into existence, PAGD leaders said that their priority was to fight for the restoration of Article 370 and not contest elections. But in November 2021, it decided to jointly contest the elections to the District Development Council (DDC).

But till now there is no consensus on whether PAGD will contest the assembly elections separately or together.Mehbooba says doing so would be a collective decision and the group is yet to reach a decision, as traditionally all have been political rivals.

There is restlessness among these leaders about this matter, this organization has not been able to achieve any of its objectives so far.Gupkar is a group of political parties of Jammu and Kashmir and which came together to restore the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The PAGD suffered a major setback when the Sajjad Lone-led People’s Conference (PC) party walked out of the alliance on January 19 this year.

Presently NC PDP, CPI(M), Awami National Conference (ANC) and People’s Movement (PM) are the remaining constituents of the alliance. Earlier, Congress, PC and the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) led by jailed Engineer Rasheed were also part of the alliance.PAGD has diversity of ideologies, policies and individual views, hence they are clashing on many issues.
