“Let Amit Shah Walk From Jammu To Lal Chowk If All’s Well”: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised Amit Shah, the union home minister, today for the law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir and challenged him with walking from Jammu to Srinagar if the security situation really has improved.

Due to an alleged security breach earlier this week, Mr. Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra had to be briefly stopped. The BJP made fun of the Congress leader and claimed that he was making “baseless charges” while the police denied any oversight.

If the situation is so good, why don’t the BJP people walk from Jammu to Lal Chowk? Mr. Gandhi asked, pointing out that targeted killings and bomb blasts have become extremely common in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking during a media briefing in Srinagar, where tomorrow’s closing ceremony of the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra would take place, he said, “Why doesn’t Mr. Amit Shah walk from Jammu to Lal Chowk if the situation is so secure?”

Since Mr. Gandhi arrived in Jammu and Kashmir, his security has attracted media attention.

The Congress had called off the yatra on Friday, citing a security breach.

Omar Abdullah, the leader of the National Conference, and Mr. Gandhi were surrounded by a sizable crowd as the Yatra entered Qazigund from Banihal, intending to travel 16 km to Anantnag that day. This was despite the fact that it was raining and only 7 degrees Celsius outside.

Mr. Gandhi was instructed to stop the walk by the security roused him when they were unable to control the mob. The Jammu and Kashmir administration’s security measures, according to the Congress, have “totally disintegrated.”

According to the Jammu & Kashmir Police, they are offering “foolproof security.”

“There was no security lapse at all. We will provide foolproof security…. Only authorised persons identified by organisers and the frisked crowd were allowed inside towards the route of Yatra,” the police said in a series of tweets.

“Rahul Gandhi has developed the habit of making unrestrained allegations. The claims he has made against the Jammu and Kashmir Police and security agencies are all baseless,” said the BJP’s national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia.

“Why did the organisers not inform the police that a large number of people would be joining the Yatra from Banihal… There was no lapse in the security arrangements, and the same has been underlined by the Kashmir Police,” he had added.
