The Ethics Committee’s report suggests Mahua Moitra’s expulsion from the Seventeenth Lok Sabha, citing serious ethical, heinous, and criminal conduct. The recommendation urges an intense, legal, institutional inquiry by the Government of India within a specified timeframe.
Uproar in the House
Trinamool Congress and Congress members protested, demanding a copy of the report, leading to disruptions in the House. Trinamool Congress member Kalyan Banerjee called for a discussion on the report before any vote on the expulsion, further intensifying the uproar.
Adjournment Amid Chaos
BJP member Rajendra Agrawal, presiding over the session, adjourned the proceedings until 2 pm due to the ongoing disruptions and demands for deliberation. The situation in the House remained tense as the report’s contents triggered a heated debate.
Moitra’s Response
Following the tabling of the report, Mahua Moitra left the Parliament, stating, “Whatever has to happen, will happen after 2 pm.” The report, initially scheduled for presentation on December 4, faced delays before being tabled on Friday.
Background on the “Cash-for-Query” Scandal
The Ethics Committee had convened on November 9, where it adopted the report recommending Moitra’s expulsion. Six committee members, including Congress MP Preneet Kaur, voted in favor, while four members from opposition parties submitted dissent notes.
