The first non-Gandhi president of the Congress in more than 20 years, Mallikarjun Kharge, says today that he will "do my best to stand my ground." Speaking to reporters after the results were announced, Mr. Kharge added that he will cooperate with Shashi Tharoor, his rival in the Monday's party elections.

With 84% of the vote, the 80-year-old Gandhi family supporter defeated Mr. Tharoor in the race.

He conveyed his gratitude to Rahul Gandhi, who is currently in charge of the party's Bharat Jodo Yatra, and Sonia Gandhi.

"Rahul called me and wished me well and said he is a soldier of the party and will work for the party… I thank Sonia Gandhi. Under her leadership we twice formed government the Centre. We were strong in states as well. Her role will be remembered," he said.

Congress President-elect Mallikarjun Kharge will take charge on 26 October, announces party MP Randeep Surjewala.
