MCD Agrees To Conduct Mayoral Election On February 16

Capital Delhi has not been able to get mayor and deputy mayor even after two months of MCD elections. So far three meetings of the House have been called within a month. However, due to the political clash between BJP and Aam Aadmi Party, the House had to be adjourned. But now for the fourth time a new date has been announced. Election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi will be held on February 16.

The MCD had called a meeting of the House for the first time on 6 January. After that the second meeting was called on 24th January and within a month the third meeting was called on 6th February. However, due to ruckus created by BJP and Aam Aadmi Party members in these meetings, the election could not be held and the meeting was postponed. As per the DMC Act 1957, the election of mayor and deputy mayor is held in the first house after the body elections. However, two months have passed since the municipal elections and Delhi is yet to get a mayor.

Meanwhile, a hearing was held on the petition filed by the Aam Aadmi Party in the Supreme Court for the election of Mayor in Delhi. AAP has placed five demands before the Supreme Court in this petition. On your petition, the Supreme Court has issued notices to the LG, the Presiding Officer, the Corporation Commissioner and the Delhi Government. Now the matter will be heard in the court on 13 February.

  • 1- Satya Sharma should be removed from the post of Presiding Officer.
  • 2- The House of MCD should be called within a week.
  • 3- There should be no adjournment till the mayoral election is over.
  • 4- The rest of the elections should be held under the chairmanship of the mayor.
  • 5- Nominated councilors should not get the right to vote.

AAP gets majority in MCD elections

Earlier, on December 4, voting was held for councilors in 250 wards of MCD. The results came on 7 December and AAP won 134 seats and ended BJP's 15-year rule in the MCD. BJP had won 104 seats.
