Mukul Rohatgi Declines Government’s Proposal to Return as Attorney General

Mukul Rohtagi: Senior attorney Mukul Rohatgi turned down the government’s offer to reapply for the position of Attorney General of India, sources stated.
In June 2017, Mukul Rohatgi, 67, retired from his position as Attorney General. KK Venugopal took over after him.

His second stint was scheduled to start on October 1.

The additional term of Mr. Venugopal expires on September 30. He spent five years as the Chief Law Enforcer at the Centre. Mukul Rohatgi had already agreed to the proposal from the national government to reapply for the position of Attorney General. The sources stated that his second stint was scheduled to start on October 1.

In 2020, when Mr. Venugopal’s first term as Attorney General was set to expire, he asked the government to release him from his duties because of his advanced age. He was asked by the government to serve another term. He remained, albeit for barely two years.
