In a significant development, Nayab Singh Saini has assumed the role of Haryana’s Chief Minister, replacing Manohar Lal Khattar. Saini, who represents the OBC community and serves as a Member of Parliament from Kurukshetra, was previously appointed as the Haryana BJP state president in October last year.

Leadership Transition Amid Alliance Strain

The change in leadership occurred after Manohar Lal Khattar stepped down, citing tensions within the ruling BJP-JJP alliance, which had governed the state since 2019. Nayab Singh Saini was chosen as the BJP’s legislature party leader, marking a significant shift in Haryana’s political landscape.

Gratitude Expressed and Political Dynamics

Saini expressed his gratitude to key figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President JP Nadda, Haryana BJP In-Charge Biplab Deb, and former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The transition was influenced by strained relations between the BJP and JJP, exacerbated by unsuccessful seat-sharing negotiations for the Lok Sabha elections.

Cabinet Resignations and Legislative Balance

Following the leadership change, the Khattar-led cabinet, comprising 14 ministers, including the Chief Minister and three members from Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala’s JJP, resigned. Currently, the BJP holds 41 seats in the 90-member assembly, with additional support from independents. The JJP, with 10 seats, and Congress, with 30 seats, play crucial roles in the legislative landscape.
