Sharad Pawar's NCP, Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) suffered a major setback on Monday. These parties have lost the status of national party. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has got the status of a national party from the Election Commission (ECI). The ECI has also given back the state party status to late Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) in Uttar Pradesh, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Andhra Pradesh, PDA in Manipur, PMK in Puducherry, RSP in West Bengal and MPC in Mizoram.
Aam Aadmi Party has been nominated as a national party
The Aam Aadmi Party has been nominated as a national party on the basis of its electoral performance in the four states of Delhi, Goa, Punjab and Gujarat.
Arvind Kejriwal-led party is in power in Delhi and Punjab. Now BJP, Congress, CPI (M), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), National People's Party (NPP) and AAP are now the main national parties.
The Election Commission also announced that the NCP and the Trinamool would be recognized as state parties in Nagaland and Meghalaya on the basis of their performance in the recently held assembly elections. While Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas in Nagaland, Voice of the People Party in Meghalaya and Tipra Motha in Tripura were given the status of recognized state political parties.
If a party has got the status of a regional party in 4 states, then it can get the status of a national party.
If a party has won at least 2 percent of the total seats in the Lok Sabha. Also, if the party's candidates are elected from at least three states, then the party can get the status of a national party.
Apart from 4 Lok Sabha seats, if a party gets 6 percent votes in 4 states in the assembly or Lok Sabha elections, then it gets this status from the Election Commission.
