Nepal's President dissolves Parliament on PM Oli advice

A major crisis has arisen in Nepal's politics. Nepal's President Vidya Devi Bhandari dissolved the Parliament on the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and announced a mid-term general election in April-May. Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is facing opposition within the party, had recommended the dissolution of Parliament, taking unexpected steps. He took this decision in a hurried cabinet meeting on Sunday morning. He later met the President and handed him a Cabinet recommendation. After the fast turnaround events, there is a possibility of political war in Nepal.

Barshaman Pun, who was the Energy Minister in the Oli cabinet, said, "Today's cabinet meeting decided to send the recommendation to dissolve Parliament." Many members of the ruling party have criticized the PM's move. The PM took this step when he lost the majority in the parliamentary committee.

Nepal Communist Party spokesman Narayankaji Shrestha said that this decision has been taken in a hurry. Not all ministers were also present at the meeting. This is completely unconstitutional. Political analysts believe that there is no provision in the Constitution to dissolve the government in this way.

The main opposition party Nepali Congress has called an emergency meeting on the changing circumstances after the sudden political crisis in Nepal. A day before the government's decision came, opposition parties National Congress and Rashtriya Janata Party had urged the President to convene a special session of Parliament. The parliament of Nepal was elected in 2017 and has 275 members.

Constitutional expert Dinesh Tripathi said that as long as there is a possibility of forming a government, there is no provision to dissolve Parliament. Another constitutional expert Bhimrajun Acharya said that Oli's recommendation to dissolve the House is a constitutional coup. He said, "If there is a possibility of forming a government, the Nepali Constitution does not allow the Prime Minister to dissolve Parliament and hold mid-term elections."

The entire development began on Sunday morning when Prime Minister Oli called a meeting of ministers. The meeting recommended the dissolution of the country's parliament and mid-term elections. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli reached out to President Vidya Devi Bhandari regarding this Cabinet proposal. By noon, the President dissolved the Parliament, approving the Cabinet proposal. With this, a mid-term election was also announced in the country.
