Nitish Kumar to take oath as Chief Minister of Bihar today

Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar is all set to take oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister for the eighth time today afternoon. The development comes after Kumar announced a “Grand Alliance” that includes Tejashwi Yadav-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other parties. Besides Kumar, Tejashwi is also likely to take oath as Deputy Chief Minister.

Yesterday, Nitish Kumar announced the RJD is going to part ways with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). All JD(U) MLAs and MPs supported Kumar’s decision to quit the NDA.

“Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) of seven parties, one Independent will work closely,” Nitish Kumar said after his second meeting with the Governor yesterday. In the first one, he resigned as Chief Minister of the government which consisted of his party, the Janata Dal United or JDU, and the BJP; less than an hour later, he returned to the Governor, accompanied by Tejashwi Yadav and other Opposition leaders, to state that they should be invited to form the next government based on their combined strength.

Kumar, 71, who earlier in the day submitted his resignation as the chief minister heading the NDA coalition, said he submitted a list of 164 MLAs to Governor Phagu Chauhan who will decide when the oath-taking can take place.

The effective strength of the state Assembly is 242 and the magic figure is 122.
