Punjab News: The elections for the gram panchayats in Punjab will be held on October 15, as announced by State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri on Sunday. Candidates interested in contesting the elections can submit their nomination forms by October 4 at the respective offices of returning officers.
No Dues Certificate Simplification for Candidates
To facilitate the nomination process, the State Election Commission has issued directions to all district election officers concerning the submission of the required no dues certificate or a no objection certificate alongside the nomination papers. Raj Kamal Chaudhuri clarified that candidates who face difficulty in obtaining a no dues certificate may submit an affidavit instead. The affidavit should declare that the candidate does not have any outstanding taxes, dues, or unauthorized occupation of any property owned by local authorities, as per Section 11 of the Punjab State Election Commission Act, 1994.
Affidavit Submission and Process Timeline
The returning officers will be responsible for accepting such nomination papers with affidavits and forwarding them to the concerned authorities. The authorities must provide a report within 24 hours. If no response is received within this timeframe, the candidate will be presumed not to be a defaulter or in unauthorized occupation under the Act, allowing them to move forward in the election process.
This move aims to streamline the election procedure and ensure a smooth and efficient process for all participants.
