UP govt denies permission to Rahul Gandhi to visit Lakhimpur Kheri

The Uttar Pradesh government, late on Tuesday night, denied permission to a Congress delegation led by Rahul Gandhi to visit Lakhimpur Kheri as Section 144 has been enforced there after Sunday’s violence.

As per the official note, “Section 144 of CrPC implemented in the state capital Lucknow with immediate effect. Section 144 will remain in force in the capital till November 8 to maintain law and order and ensure adherence to Covid-19 rules in view of upcoming festivals, various entrance exams and farmers’ protests.”

The party leaders had planned to meet the family members of four farmers who were among eight killed in Sunday’s violence.

The Uttar Pradesh government has also deployed police to stop opposition leaders from travelling to Tikunia, about 70 km away from the district headquarters of Lakhimpur Kheri.

The state government has announced a judicial inquiry under a retired high court judge in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.

Earlier, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal had sought permission for the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress delegation to visit the area. On the other hand, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, who was detained early on Monday, continues to remain in detention after she tried to reach Lakhimpur Kheri.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Misra said he would resign from his post if there was a single piece of evidence of his son Ashish being at the spot where violence broke out in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Speaking to IndiaToday, Misra said, “I will resign from ministership if a single proof surfaces of my son being on the spot where the incident happened in Lakhimpur Kheri.”

On Monday, an FIR was filed against Ajay Misra’s son, Ashish Misra in connection with the case.
