West Bengal: ED summons seven IPS officer in coal smuggling case

In the Coal Smuggling Case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned seven IPS officers posted in West Bengal.

According to India Today the IPS officers – Gyanwant Singh (ADG, CID), Koteshwar Rao (SP), S Selvamurugan (SP, Purulia), Shyam Singh (DIG, Midnapore Range), Rajeev Mishra (ADG & IGP, Planning) Sukesh Kumar Jain (Cyber, CID) and Tathagata Basu (SP) have been summoned.

All of them have been asked by the ED to join the probe on different dates in July and August. The interrogation of these IPS officers is expected to begin from July 26 and continue till at least August 6. Some of the summoned IPS officers were posted in the area where illegal coal mining and smuggling was taking place.

According to sources, the ED investigation indicates that the IPS officers were aware of the coal smuggling racket, but no action was taken by them. Sources also claim that some police officers were also involved in the transportation of cash in government vehicles.

Earlier, the ED had arrested Vikas Mishra, brother of absconding accused Vinay Mishra in this case. TMC youth leader and prime accused in the case Vinay Mishra is an alleged close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
