In a dramatic response to the current case of lingual conflict in Maharashtra, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Nishikant Dubey made an outrageous speech as he was addressing the audience at Gangtok, Sikkim. He was responding to those purportedly beating up the workers of Hindi-speaking origin in Maharashtra, and the video of his remarks, which went viral, was shared on social media. Dubey did not merely deconstruct the discourse of linguistic superiority but also wondered why such aggression is not taken towards elite non-Marathi speakers in Mumbai.

The shocking element is his previous statement about non-Maharashtrian taxpayers supporting the economy of Mumbai, a point that was greatly misinterpreted by people, as expressed by Dubey. When he made the last reply, he made it clear that he did not mean his words against the Maratha community or the Thackeray family, but he was trying to emphasize the necessity of inclusivity and respect for one another.

"If You Have Guts, Go to Mukesh Ambani" – The Viral Challenge

In his now-viral statement, Nishikant Dubey posed a cutting question: You are beating up the poor Hindi-speaking people, but since you have the guts, why not go to Mukesh Ambani? He can hardly talk in Marathi.” He even dared the ones who misused the row created by language to face the chairman of SBI or visit the Mahim area, where Muslims are numerically large.

His comment was more than rhetoric, but a critique of what he referred to as the targeting of vulnerable communities selectively. The rather confrontational tone that Dubey assumes shows a stronger fear of regionalism becoming a form of street violence.

A Clarification on Economic Contributions

Dubey also repeated that the economy of Mumbai does not exist based on local contribution to tax alone. Even Sikkim folks save their money in SBI or LIC, the head office of which is in Mumbai. That tax is under the Maharashtra account, he explained. He also made it clear that he was trying to highlight the national identity of the Mumbai economy, not downgrade the importance of Maharashtra.

He also mentioned the historical contributions of Maharashtra to the economic growth of India and made it clear that he had not said anything about that since others aimed to politicize the language problem.
