Maharashtra minister Sanjay Shirsat has found himself in the middle of a fresh controversy. A viral video shows the Shiv Sena leader sitting casually on his bed, smoking a cigarette with a large bag of cash lying beside him. This comes just a day after he received an Income Tax notice over a sharp rise in his assets.
The video is now all over social media and has left people stunned. Shirsat’s pet dog is seen in the background. Opposition leaders have slammed the Maharashtra government.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut posted the clip on X and wrote, “I feel pity for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis! How many more times will he just sit and watch his reputation being torn to shreds? Helplessness has another name: Fadnavis!”

@rautsanjay61 drops a bomb! Shares a video of Shinde Sena leader and Minister #SanjayShirsat. The minister is seen smoking along with bags full of cash in what looks like a hotel room. Yesterday, Shirsat had been served a notice by IT dept. What's going on in Maharashtra? pic.twitter.com/6BD73BZxXl

The Income Tax Department flagged a major jump in Shirsat’s assets between 2019 and 2024. When reporters asked him about the notice, Shirsat admitted receiving it. He explained, “Some people had filed a complaint against me with the Income Tax department, based on which I was issued a notice. I was supposed to respond on Wednesday, but requested for more time. I will give a proper response. Nothing wrong has been done.”
Interestingly, Shirsat first said that Shrikant Shinde (the son of Deputy CM Eknath Shinde) also got a similar I-T notice. But soon after, he took back his statement, saying he wasn’t sure if Shinde had actually received one. Shirsat said, “Someone asked me a leading question about whether Shrikant Shinde also received a notice and is it part of political vendetta... I want to clarify that I have no idea about whether the I-T department has issued a notice to Shinde."
He also brushed off talks of any political targeting. He told the media, “The system is doing its work and I have no problem with it. I am not under any pressure."
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena sources denied that any notices were issued to the Shinde family. They explained that Shirsat’s case was flagged automatically through the Computer Assisted Scrutiny Selection (CASS) system for the 2024-25 assessment year.
Recently, another video of Shirsat surfaced from an event in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. In it, he joked about his financial struggles and said, “Now, black money is not going to be useful. I am speaking for myself."
He added, “It is easy to earn money, but using it has become difficult. I have contacted my chartered accountant.”
This isn't the first time Shirsat has faced scrutiny. He and his son were earlier accused in the Maharashtra Legislative Council over a hotel deal.
