Rahul Gandhi: Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has asked three tough questions to the Center and presented four demands while speaking on the Election Commission’s special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Rahul Gandhi’s 3 Questions
Gandhi asked why the Chief Justice of India was removed from the selection panel of appointing election commissioners. He also asked why a gift of immunity was provided to the election commissioner by the PM and the Home Minister. Gandhi also asked for the reasons that allow the Election Commission to destroy CCTV footage 45 days after the election.
Gandhi also demanded that the law that allows the destruction of CCTV footage should be removed. He also said that a machine-readable voter list should be provided to all parties a month before elections. Gandhi also demanded details on the architecture of the EVM (electronic voting machine) while saying the law that allows the EC to get away with whatever he wants to do should be removed.
Gandhi went to remark that there is no bigger anti-national act than stealing votes.
The Response of BJP
Reacting to Gandhi, BJP asked him to name one EC during the Congress government who was chosen by a committee that included either the Chief Justice of India or the Leader of the Opposition. On its official handle, BJP said Congress Prime Ministers directly appointed Election Commissioners and said Sonia Gandhi appointed Navin Chawla as Election Commissioner without any authority. BJP added Congress directly appointed VS Sampath as CEC ignoring a suggestion by senior BJP leader LK Advani when he had suggested the creation of a collegium for the selection process.
BJP added the leader of the opposition today is a part of the committee to select the Chief Election Commissioner. It was added that Gandhi indulges only in drama instead of constructively assisting in the process.
