Ramadan 2026 Likely to Begin on February 18 or 19, Moon Sighting to Decide

Religious and judicial bodies examine reports and then issue an official declaration observed nationwide.

The holy month of Ramadan in 2026 is expected to begin on either February 18 or February 19, depending on the sighting of the new crescent moon. Authorities anticipate that the first fast will most likely fall on Thursday, February 19, though an earlier start remains possible if the moon is sighted on the evening of February 17.

Ramadan 2026: Moon Sighting Determines Start of Month

Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, in which each month begins only after the crescent moon is sighted. On the 29th evening of Sha’ban, observers traditionally scan the western horizon shortly after sunset. The crescent must remain visible after sunset long enough for it to be seen in the darkening sky.

If the moon is spotted that evening, fasting begins the next day. If not, the preceding month completes 30 days and Ramadan begins the following day.

Why Dates Differ Across Countries

Different countries may begin Ramadan on different dates because they follow distinct moon-sighting methods. Some nations rely strictly on local visual confirmation, while others use astronomical calculations to determine the lunar month’s start. This variation often leads to regional differences of one day.

Official Confirmation Process

In Saudi Arabia, testimonies from verified moon-sighters are formally reviewed before authorities announce the start of Ramadan. Religious and judicial bodies examine reports and then issue an official declaration observed nationwide.

Quick Date Guide

  • Moon sighted evening of Feb 17 → Ramadan begins Feb 18
  • Moon not sighted → Ramadan begins Feb 19
