Restrictions imposed in city areas to thwart Muharram processions in Srinagar

Authorities in Srinagar have imposed curfew-like restrictions to prevent the Shia community from taking out Muharram processions.

Restrictions have been imposed on the movement and assembly of people in several areas of Srinagar city, officials said.

Restrictions have been imposed to maintain law and order on the eighth day of Muharram. Muharram is a mourning observed for 10 days.

Officials said security forces have been deployed to avoid any untoward incident. In areas where restrictions have been imposed, shops and other commercial establishments are closed while public vehicles are off the roads.

He said that the district administration has decided not to allow Muharram processions on some routes to maintain law and order.

Law and order situation top priority Referring to the incident of violence in the past, the district magistrate of Srinagar said that keeping in view the public interest and safety of citizens, law and order situation is the top priority of the government.

He said that alternative routes have already been provided to take out Muharram procession peacefully. In case of any violation, the security agencies will take cognizance of the matter under the law.

Traditional processions used to pass through these areas on the eighth day of Muharram, but they were banned after militancy broke out in 1990.
