Rishi Sunak: British Conservative politician Rishi Sunak Sunak was close to reaching the 100 MP nominations that is needed to enter the race to be the next Conservative leader and prime minister.

British Conservative politician Rishi Sunak late Friday reached the minimum threshold to run for party leader, as former prime minister Boris Johnson targeted an audacious comeback. The ex-chancellor had secured 93 endorsements from Tory MPs while some reports said he had already reached the 100 mark.

Meanwhile former leader Boris Johnson was also poised to enter the race as he had 44 nominations. Reports said he was headed home after cutting short his vacation in The Caribbeans.

James Duddridge, one of Johnson's closest allies in parliament, said he had been in contact with his old boss via WhatsApp.

"He said... 'We are going to do this. I'm up for it'," the MP said, as a photograph was published showing Johnson on a flight home from the Dominican Republic.

Neither Sunak nor Johnson has publicly declared they are running.

Mordaunt too a candidate

Earlier Cabinet member Penny Mordaunt formally declared her candidacy, after the UK's ruling party was forced into a second leadership contest following the dramatic resignation of Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Sunak won support from senior colleagyes. "Honoured to be the 100th Tory MP to support #Ready4Rishi," tweeted senior leader Tobias Ellwood.

Former chancellor and health secretary Sajid Javid, said "It is abundantly clear that Rishi Sunak has what it takes to match the challenges we face - he is the right person to lead our party and take the country forward."

Appeal to BoJo

On the other side, security minister Tom Tugendhat, appealed to the scandal-tainted ex-leader Boris Johnson to stay out of the race. "This is no time for political games, for settling scores, or for looking backwards," Tugendhat said as he also endorsed Sunak late Friday.
