Savita Kanswal, Record-Setting Mountaineer, Dies in Avalanche

Savita Kanswal, who hoisted the tricolor on the world's highest peak Everest, has died. 29 trainees of the Nehru Mountaineering Institute (NMI), including Savita, were trapped after being hit by an avalanche in Draupadi's Danda in Uttarakhand.

Colonel Amit Bisht, principal of Uttarkashi-based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), confirmed her death on Wednesday. Savita's body is included in the four bodies exhumed so far. 41-member team of climbers was returning after climbing the peak after being hit by an avalanche on Tuesday. Savita Kanswal used to work as an instructor in NIM.

As soon as the news of Savita's death reached her village, there was mourning in her village. The former head of Lonthru village said that about the death of Savita Kanswal in the accident, we had received information late night, she got trapped in the avalanche and lost her life in this accident.

Savita Kanswal hoisted the tricolor on May 12 this year on Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, 8848 meters above. Savita had also reached Mount Makalu, 8463 meters above it 15 days later.

Savita had made a national record in her name. The rescue operation was stopped a day earlier due to bad weather but from the morning of 5 October, the IAF got involved in the operation.
