Shaheena Shaheen, Baloch women journalist shot dead in Balochistan

Before Shaheena, another Pakistani journalist Sajid Gondal also went missing from Islamabad

Shaheena Shaheen Baloch, a Baloch woman journalist, was shot and killed in Kech, Balochistan on Saturday. Shaheen was a morning host at PTV and was the Editor of Balochi magazine Dazgohar.

Police said unidentified suspects opened fire on Shaheen at her residence in TTC Colony of Turbat. The killers escaped unhurt from the scene.

She was shifted to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Turbat where she succumbed to her injuries. She received three bullet wounds, police official Allah Bakhsh told DawnNewsTV.

Shaheena, a supporter of gender equality, was known for campaigning for women’s empowerment in Balochistan. At present, the police have started the investigation of the whole case but have not yet disclosed.

Before Shaheena, another Pakistani journalist Sajid Gondal also went missing from Islamabad. Local people have expressed opposition to this incident.

The police reportedly found blood and empty bullet shells at a house where the shooting allegedly took place. The house is said to be of one Akbar Gichki, Shaheena Shaheen Baloch’s husband.

It is believed her husband killed Shaheen because she was becoming famous in her area, a conservative part of Balochistan.

In a report compiled in 2018, it was estimated that 50 people, including 30 women, had been killed in the name of honour in Balochistan.

Meanwhile, Balochistan Government’s spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani said that murder was “extremely unfortunate” and strict action will be taken against culprits.
