‘Stop interfering in Afghanistan affairs’, Taliban leader to the world

KABUL: Taliban’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada held a meeting on Friday for the world to stop telling what to do and who not. The leader said implementing Sharia law was the only way to apply for a successful Islamic state.

The leader, who has not been photographed in public ever since the Taliban came in power in August last year, called out a huge gathering of its religious scholars in its capital city ‘Kabul’ to stamp the Islamist group’s rule.

Approximately 3,000 clerics gathered in the meeting carried out by Akhundzada in Kabul on Thursday as the meeting was held for three days and was a men-only meeting. The appearance of Akhundzada had been rumoured for so many days, although the media are banned from covering the event.

“Why is the world interfering in our affairs?” he asked in an hour-long speech broadcast by state radio.

“They say ‘why don’t you do this, why don’t you do that?’ Why does the world interfere in our work?”

Hibatullah Akhundzada rarely leaves Kandahar, the Taliban’s birthplace and spiritual birthland, and there are no digital footprints except few audio recordings and a photograph of Hibatullah.

His appearance came to light a week after a powerful earthquake struck the east of the country, that killed approximately 1,000 people and left numerous people homeless.

Akhundzada’s arrival at the meeting venue was greeted with chants of “Long live the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan”, the Taliban’s name for the country. No women are allowed to attend the meeting happening for three days, but as per a Taliban source, it is said that this week the hardcore issues such as girls’ education- which has divided opinion in the movement, will be discussed.

On the contrary, the supreme leader did not mention the subject of the meeting in his speech.
