Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday interacted with media persons after a crucial meeting on the long-pending Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, reiterating the state’s firm stand on protecting Punjab’s water rights. The Chief Minister addressed the press live from Chandigarh, highlighting the seriousness of the matter and Punjab’s consistent position.
CM Bhagwant Mann Addresses Media After Key Meeting
During the interaction, CM Bhagwant Mann underlined that Punjab has already made immense sacrifices and does not have surplus water to share. He maintained that any discussion on SYL must be rooted in ground realities, scientific assessment, and constitutional fairness, keeping the interests of Punjab’s farmers and people at the forefront.
Punjab’s Stand on Water Rights
The Chief Minister stressed that water is a lifeline for Punjab’s agrarian economy and any decision affecting it must ensure justice to the state. He reiterated that Punjab has always respected federal principles and expects the same spirit to be upheld while addressing inter-state disputes.
Call for Dialogue, Not Imposition
CM Mann said that while Punjab believes in dialogue and constitutional processes, no unilateral decision will be acceptable. He asserted that the state government will continue to present Punjab’s case strongly at every forum, including before the Centre and the judiciary, if required.
Transparency with the Public
By addressing the media immediately after the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized transparency and accountability. He stated that keeping the people informed on sensitive issues like SYL is essential, as it directly impacts Punjab’s future generations.
