New Update
Aprilla RSV4

Aprilla RSV4: Piaggio has patented a new variable valve timing (VVT) system, which could be used in the Aprilia RSV4 of the next generation. The patent for the Italian company indicates a system that is very inexpensive in contrast to that of competitors like Suzuki, which relies on a setup that is entirely mechanical.

Piaggio is working on a variable valve timing (VVT) system with balls situated in radial channels

It would seem that Piaggio is working on a variable valve timing (VVT) system with balls situated in radial channels that are fastened in the intake cam sprocket and a driving piece that matches. The ormer in the Aprilia system experiences less friction than the one in the Suzuki system since it only has three balls as opposed to the dozen balls that are used in the Suzuki system. A rather thin disc sits between the cam sprocket and the drive plate that is camshaft-mounted. It features cutouts in the drive plate so that the previously mentioned three balls and three W-shaped springs can be inserted into them.

As soon as the engine speed is reduced, the springs and cam timing return to their previous positions.

Later on, when the speed of the camshaft continues to increase, the balls are pushed outwards, which causes it to rotate by a few degrees in conjunction with the sprocket. This causes the springs to be compressed. When the engine speed drops to a lower level, the springs will return to their starting position, and the cam timing will also be at its starting position.

Piaggio's development of the forthcoming VVT system is currently in the preliminary phases at this point in time. However, we anticipate that it will make its first appearance on Aprilia's RSV4, which is the company's most advanced model.
