Tomato Flu Spreading In India, Know Details

Medical experts of India are now preparing to fight another new virus. According to Lancet study, about 82 cases of tomato flu have been seen in India. Where the first case was reported on May 6. According to the study, this new virus seems to be making children its victims. This flu has been seen in children aged 1 to 5 years.

At the same time, immunocompromised adults can also be a new variant of disease related to hand, foot and mouth.

What is tomato flu ?

Tomato flu virus was first reported in Kerala on 6 May 2022. Its initial symptoms are very similar to corona, but this virus is not related to SARS-CoV-2.

Rather it is a viral infection. Tomato Flu can develop in children after a fever like Chikungunya and Dengue.

Why is it called tomato flu?

In this disease, red colored rashes are formed on the body, which are also quite painful. They can grow up to the size of a tomato. That’s why they are called tomato flu.

Know the symptoms of tomato flu

The initial symptoms seen in children with tomato flu are similar to those of chikungunya, including high fever, rash and severe joint pain. Some of its symptoms such as body ache, fever and fatigue were found to be similar to the symptoms of K
Covid-19 patients. Other symptoms include swollen joints, nausea, diarrhea, dehydration, and high fever. In some cases, patients also reported the formation of rashes on their skin. Patients with such symptoms should get tested for viruses like dengue, chikungunya, zika virus, varicella-zoster virus and herpes.

This test is done through molecular and serological tests. If none of these diseases is found then it can be tomato flu.

The treatment of tomato flu is similar to that of diseases like chikungunya and dengue. The patient is advised to isolate and take rest. Compression can be done by applying a sponge of hot water on the rash.
