Toyota GR Crolla

The Toyota GR Corolla is based on the common Corolla hatchback sold in foreign markets, but Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) performance team has extensively modified this version of the hatchback to increase performance.

The GR Corolla is built on the same TNGA platform as the conventional hatchback from Toyota, but it features a very stiff body that was built specifically for racing by Gazoo. In comparison to the norm, it has more welds around the chassis connections and uses structural adhesive more extensively between the various parts. It uses a lot of lightweight materials and weighs 1,474 kg (kerb) less than a typical hatchback.

Powertrain Details

What’s under the hood of the GR Corolla is the major talking point. The hatchback’s 1.6-litre, three-cylinder, single-scroll turbocharged engine can generate 304 horsepower and 370 Newton metres of peak torque, which is almost as potent as the 2.0-litre engine found in the Mercedes-AMG A35 sedan.

A triple-exit exhaust system that increases exhaust flow and decreases back pressure, a new “multi-oil jet piston” cooling system, larger exhaust valves, and a partially machined intake port are just a few of the modifications made to the engine by GR.

Power is delivered to all four wheels through the engine’s 6-speed manual transmission. Additionally, the gearbox incorporates a rev-matching feature that enables smoother downshifts. Toyota makes no performance claims for the GR Corolla, although a 0-100kph time that approaches the 5-second mark should be anticipated.

Design details

Over the standard hatchback, the GR Corolla receives a rally-inspired makeover that includes black trim accents, a larger front grille with wider air intakes, heavily flared wheel arches, air ducts on the bumpers and fenders, a pronounced rear diffuser, sportier alloy wheels, and a prominent rear wing. This is matched with modifications to the interior that have a motorsports theme, such as a leather-wrapped GR steering wheel, GR-badged seats, and aluminium pedals.
