Tripura Congress Chief Pijush Biswas resigns from post

Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee acting president Pijush Kanti Biswas has resigned from the post and “retired from politics as well”, he announced in a tweet posted Saturday afternoon.

“With sincere gratitude I thank all Congress leaders, supporters for your cooperation during my tenure as TPCC President (acting). Today I have resigned from the post of President and retired from politics as well. My sincere gratitude towards Sonia Gandhiji,” he tweeted.

Biswas said he has already forwarded his resignation letter to All India Congress Committee (AICC) supremo Sonia Gandhi and party’s senior leader Rahul Gandhi.

Talking to reporters, he said, “The reasons are not to be disclosed. I can only say that I resigned due to personal reasons. I have no plan of joining any other party.”

Pinush Biswas is now likely to switch to the Trinamool Congress, NDTV quoted sources as saying.

Biswas is the fifth important Congress leader in the northeastern states – Assam, Manipur, and Tripura – to quit the party in the past three months.

Four-time Congress legislator and prominent Assam tea garden leader Rupjyoti Kurmi and two-time Assam Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain had recently deserted the party and joined the BJP.

In Manipur, state party president Govindas Konthoujam, a six-time MLA and former minister in the Congress-led government in the northeastern state, resigned from the party and joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party last month.
