On July 20, three female students of a private paramedical college were suspended in Udupi, Karnataka. They were accused of making a video of a girl student using a mobile phone inside the washroom. The institute reported the matter to the police on the same day, following which an investigation was launched.

But the incident took a serious communal turn in the next few days. Several right-wing groups alleged that the suspended girl students, who were Muslim, used hidden cameras to shoot private videos of "Hindu girls" and spread them among Muslim boys as part of a "jihadi conspiracy".

The Udupi Police as well as the Institute have strongly denied these claims.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Hake Akshay Machindra told the media on Tuesday, July 25, "A lot of people are sharing misinformation and rumors on social media regarding this incident. Perhaps, they are doing so with some motive. I would like to clarify that although there were reports that cameras were hidden, but to the best of our knowledge, no such thing has been used in this case."
