In September 2022, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had announced that the Indian government would make it mandatory for passenger cars to have a minimum of six airbags, with the rule slated to come into effect from October 2023.

Recent Development:
Nitin Gadkari has now retracted the proposal to mandate six airbags in passenger cars. At an automotive conference in New Delhi, he stated that the government would not make the six-airbag rule mandatory. Gadkari emphasized that people have become more cautious about safety, and car buyers can decide whether to opt for models with six airbags. The decision is left to manufacturers and consumers.

Gadkari had initially announced the proposal in 2022, citing global supply chain constraints and the need to enhance safety features in vehicles. However, this proposed rule was never finalized, and the minister has now officially retracted it.

The addition of four more airbags was estimated to cost around $75 (₹6,221) per vehicle by the Indian government. In contrast, auto market data provider JATO Dynamics suggested that it would raise costs by at least $231 (₹19,161).

Existing Airbag Requirements:
Currently, vehicles manufactured on and after April 1, 2021, are required to have airbags for both front seats. Airbags serve as occupant-restraint systems that provide protection during collisions by preventing serious injuries.
