US congressional delegation arrived in Taiwan

According to media reports, on Sunday US congressional delegation arrived in Taiwan.

“Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), Representative John Garamendi (D-CA), Representative Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), Representative Don Beyer (D-VA), and Representative Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen (R-AS) will visit Taiwan from August 14-15, 2022, as part of a larger visit to the Indo-Pacific region,” the American Institute in Taiwan said in a statement.

“The delegation will meet with senior Taiwan leaders to discuss US-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade and investment, global supply chains, climate change, and other significant issues of mutual interest,” it added.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its sincere welcome (to the delegation),” the ministry said in a statement Sunday.

“As China is continuing to escalate tensions in the region, the US Congress has again organized a heavyweight delegation to visit Taiwan, showing a friendship that is not afraid of China’s threats and intimidation, and highlighting the US’ strong support towards Taiwan.”

“The two sides will extensively exchange views on issues such as Taiwan-US security and trade relations,” it said.

Tensions between China and the US have begun after US Parliament Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. The reason for China’s displeasure is the US support to Taiwan, which is now going to increase.

In response to China’s ‘provocative’ attitude, the US will boost its trade with Taiwan. The White House gave this information on Friday. The US has insisted on the right of air and sea routes through the tense strait. Amidst threats from China, this announcement by America may make the dragon angry.

Kurt Campbell, the White House coordinator for Asia-Pacific issues and adviser to US President Joe Biden, said a new trade plan with Taiwan would be in front of everyone in the coming days and that US forces would cross the Taiwan Strait in the next few weeks. US made the announcement at a time when China launched its largest-ever military exercise around Taiwan, angered by Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last week.

China called Pelosi’s visit a violation of sovereignty. At the same time, Taiwan has termed the Chinese exercise as a ‘preparation for attack’. China lays claim to Taiwan and has spoken of forcefully occupying it if needed. Campbell said Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was in line with US policy and that China had “overreacted” to it.

Warning that China is using Pelosi’s visit as an excuse to “launch an intense pressure campaign against Taiwan”, which is “expected to continue in the coming weeks”.

Jinping will leave China for the first time after Corona

“The goal of this operation is clear – to intimidate and force Taiwan and reduce its resilience,” the official said. Chinese officials are planning President Xi Jinping’s first one-on-one summit with his US counterpart Joe Biden during meetings in Southeast Asia in November. If Xi travels to Southeast Asia in November, it will be his first international trip in nearly three years amid the coronavirus pandemic.
