Uttarakhand’s Almora water reservoir gets national monument tag

The 500 year old water reservoir “Syunrakot ka Naula” in Syunrakot village of Almora, Uttarakhand is famous for its outstanding architectural features now has been declared as a monument of national importance.

“The Union government issued a gazette notification recently declaring the Syunrakot naula a protected monument of national importance. Now, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will do the conservation work of this aquifer,” said Manoj Kumar Saxena, ASI Dehradun circle head.

It has been the main source of drinking water since ancient times. Many canals were built during the reign of Katyur, Chand. Which are still seen as historical heritage. Even today people are getting pure drinking water from them.

Syunrakot village dates back to the Katyuri rule

The ancient naula in Syunrakot village dates back to the Katyuri rule. It was constructed in the 14th century. For a long time, the residents of the area were demanding the preservation of this historical boat. After which the Archaeological Department also conducted the survey. This Naula due to lack of protection. It was getting over continuously. The Central Government has issued a gazette notification to declare the ancient monument as national importance under Section 4 sub-section 1 of the Ancient Monument and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.

Earlier it was mentioned in the notification of the Ministry of Culture that if anyone has any objection or suggestion, they can send the information to the Director General Archaeological Survey of India.

The construction of the Naula is very simple and balanced. The kund is made deep enough by steps with steps. In the construction of square or rectangular room, only the style of Garga Garbha Graha and Ardha Mandap, Pillar Mandap has been adopted.

In this, separate arrangements have been made for washing clothes and bathing by making a simple room above the kund and placing a big screen on both sides of the entrance in the verandah. The sloping roof is covered with patalo. The roof of the verandah is supported on two or four pillars. The pillars of the entrance have been decorated with various ornaments like Pushpa Lata Manibandh branch. The Kund formation in Naula is square. There is no arrangement of doors in the canals. The demand for the preservation of the historical boat was being made for a long time. After being declared a national monument, the historical heritage will be protected.
