Vehicle Ban: The Delhi-NCR central government issued an order on Sunday, citing deteriorating air quality in the area, banning non-essential construction work and the use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers.
Unfavourable weather and local pollution sources were the main causes of Delhi's high AQI (458 and 457 at 10 and 11 am), according to the Commission for Air Quality Management, a statutory body in charge of developing and implementing the region's plans for reducing air pollution.
Vehicle Ban as GRAP 3 gets imposed
The Delhi Transport Minister, Kailash Gahlot, confirmed the restriction on Sunday on his X handle. The post stated that BS4 diesel and BS3 petrol cars (LMVs) cannot be driven in Delhi till further orders are received. A punishment of up to Rs 20,000 could be imposed on anyone found to be disobeying these orders.
Along with BS4 diesel and BS3 petrol vehicles, non-essential building and demolition operations, such as the usage of stone crushers, have been restricted by the CAQM. Additionally, all mining activities in Delhi NCR are to be stopped, after a directive from the Centre. Movement has also been temporarily stopped on dirt routes.
What is GRAP?
The Center's approach to reduce air pollution in the area during the winter months is called the Graded Response Action approach (GRAP).
Four stages are used to classify actions: "Very Poor" (AQI 301–400), "Poor" (AQI 201-300), "Severe" (AQI 401–450), and "Severe Plus" (AQI>450) are the four levels of quality assessment.
