Swami Sivananda has been awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution in the field of Yoga. But as Swami’s name was called in Rashtrapati Bhavan to receive the award, he went straight to PM Modi and started bowing to him. Seeing this, PM Modi also immediately got up from his chair and he also accepted Swami’s salutation in the same posture.
Seeing this unique greeting between PM Modi and Swami Sivananda, the whole hall erupted with applause. Everyone was surprised by this style of Swami. In the following lines, the ministers sitting around PM Modi also got up and started bowing to Swami.
After this, 125-year-old Swami Sivananda went to the President and bowed down to him. The President came down and picked him up and started talking about something. After this Swami Sivananda was awarded the Padma Shri by the President. During this, the dignitaries present in the hall were seen standing from their seats and greeting them.
Swami Sivananda was born in the year 1896. Then he reached Kashi from Bengal and started service work there. After taking education from Guru Omkarananda, Swami Sivananda mastered yoga and meditation. It is said that when Swami was 6 years old, his sister, mother and father died within a month. But he had refused to ignite the dead body of the relatives by giving up his attachment.
On the instructions of his guru, Swami Sivananda toured the whole world for 34 consecutive years starting from London. He has traveled to countries like Europe, Australia, Russia. Swami still eats boiled food and leads a very simple life.
