The Union Budget 2025-26 has reinforced the government’s commitment to academic and research excellence by increasing the allocation for autonomous institutions to ₹42,732 crore, marking a 7.42% rise from the ₹39,777.40 crore allocated in FY 2024-25. This substantial boost aims to strengthen higher education institutions and research bodies across the country.

Increased Funding for Higher Education

A significant portion of the budget has been directed toward higher education autonomous bodies, with ₹16,691.31 crore earmarked to enhance the quality of education and research. Several key institutions have seen notable increases in their allocations:

Central Universities: ₹3,335.97 crore has been allocated, reflecting a 4.79% increase from last year.

University Grants Commission (UGC): A major boost of 33.44% has been given, raising the allocation to ₹5,687.47 crore.

National Institutes of Technology (NITs): The allocation has seen a 12.85% increase, underscoring the government's focus on strengthening technical education.

Deemed Universities: ₹604 crore has been allocated to these institutions, ensuring support for their academic and research initiatives.
