Chief Justice of India: NV Ramana calls upon youth, students for active participation in democracy

Chief Justice of India: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has called upon the students and youth to understand the importance of democracy and maintain and strengthen it through their active participation.

Ramana visits Columbia University in New York

Ramana made the observation while visiting Columbia University in New York on Thursday, where he paid tribute to one of his distinguished alumni, Dr BR Ambedkar. “The 75-year long journey of my country so far is a testament to the power of democracy. It is essential that people, especially students and youth, understand the importance of democracy. Democracy can survive and strengthen only with your active participation. Only a true democratic order can be the foundation of lasting peace in the world,” the CJI said.

Faith in Constitution of India

He said that when the transformative journey of the young republic of India is recorded in the history books, the credit will be given to the Constitution of India and people’s faith in it. “Many years ago, Dr. BR Ambedkar walked through the corridors of this great education. Today I have the privilege of following in his footsteps. It is an emotional moment for me. I do not have a privileged background. I am the son of a simple farmer. I am the first person in the family to get a university education. Today I stand here as the Chief Justice of India”.

Constitution: BR Ambedkar

He said,” this possibility arose because of India’s most progressive and futuristic constitution, which was drafted under the leadership of Dr. BR Ambedkar. I and millions of others like me will always be indebted to the visionary. Ramana said that “it is an honor for him to stand in the university which has given birth to many world leaders including Dr. Ambedkar. He was one of the founders of modern India. His life has inspired generations of Indians to believe in their own worth and identity,” he said.
