Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced that Delhi will have its own school education board.

The decision was taken during a cabinet meet in the capital.

While announcing his decision, Kejriwal said that the new arrangement will bring revolutionary changes in Delhi's current education system, and will make it reach new heights as well.
The DBSE will be aimed at imparting such education that prepares "fiercely patriotic" and self-dependent students who serve the society and the country in a selfless manner, he said.

“The Board will bring in best international practices and high-end techniques in school education. It will impart education as per the aptitude of the students,” Mr Kejriwal added.

"The focus will not be on learning by rote. It will be on understanding (of concepts) and personality development," he said, adding that students will be assessed through the year.

"We hope that all schools will voluntarily get affiliated to this board within four to five years," Mr Kejriwal said.

Delhi has 1,030 government schools and at least 1,700 private schools. While all government schools and majority of the private schools are affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), a few private schools are also associated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). Unlike other states, Delhi does not have its own state education board. There are about 1,500,000 government school students in Delhi.

The CM said that initially, 20-25 Delhi government schools will become part of the Delhi Board of School Education in the upcoming academic session (2021-22). Under the new board, students will be assessed throughout the year to develop holistic learning outcomes and make students self-reliant. The 2021-22 academic session of CBSE will begin in April.
