In a significant development that marks the global reach of India's premier technology institution, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has announced the establishment of a new campus in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The move comes in collaboration with the Education and Knowledge Department of Abu Dhabi, marked by a Memorandum of Understanding between the two entities.
The offshore campus of IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi is set to begin its academic journey with the roll-out of Master's courses in January 2024. Prospective undergraduate students can look forward to the start of Bachelor's courses from September 2024.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan expressed his enthusiasm for the venture. He stated that the new campus would serve as a model for harnessing the strength of knowledge for mutual prosperity and global good. This overseas expansion represents a strategic stride towards the internationalization of Indian education.

Interestingly, IIT Delhi is not the first institute to extend its educational footprint beyond India. This announcement follows the recent news of IIT Madras setting up a campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The Zanzibar campus is scheduled to initiate operations in October 2023. It will start with an initial intake of 50 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate students.
The announcement coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to the UAE. PM Modi held comprehensive talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to strengthen the multifaceted bilateral ties between the two nations, leading to this landmark decision.
In conclusion, the planned IIT Delhi campus in Abu Dhabi symbolizes the robust educational collaboration between India and UAE. With the inaugural academic year just around the corner, the offshore campus is ready to offer world-class education to the global student community, further enhancing the prestige of the IIT system.
