Innovation Skills in Students: A Matter of Concern

Unlocking Innovation: Nurturing Essential Skills in Students for a Thriving Future

Innovation skills are integral to human life as they empower individuals to solve problems,
adapt to change, unleash their creative potential, gain a competitive edge, pursue
entrepreneurial endeavours, and make a positive impact on society. Cultivating innovation
skills is essential for personal and professional growth, as well as for driving progress and
prosperity in the global community, to generate novel ideas, develop groundbreaking solutions,
and adapt to changing circumstances, thereby driving economic growth, social development,
and personal fulfilment (OECD 2011, 2016; NITI 2015; NEP 2020; Education for Sustainable
Development | UNESCO).

Recently, research was conducted by Dr. Priyanka Verma (under the supervision of Dr. Indrani
Head of Teacher Education Department, VMLG College, Ghaziabad) to explore the Innovation
Skills in 9th class students studying in CBSE affiliated schools of Ghaziabad in session 2021-22 She developed the Innovation Skills Measurement Scale (ISMS) to study the present status
of innovation skills in students. The percentage of students at all dimensions of innovation
skills is shown below via stacked column histogram.

Stacked column histogram of innovation skills’ dimensions at all five levels.

As per shown in above figure, the percentage of students is really a matter of concern at all
level of all dimensions of innovation skills. Creative thinking skills enable individuals to
generate innovative ideas, solve problems, and adapt to new challenges by thinking outside the
box and exploring unconventional solutions. Critical thinking skills empower individuals to
analyze, evaluate, and interpret information objectively, leading to informed decision-making,
effective problem-solving, and intellectual autonomy. Problem-solving skills are vital for
navigating challenges, generating innovative solutions, and achieving success in diverse
personal, academic, and professional endeavours. Collaboration skills are crucial for fostering
teamwork, leveraging diverse perspectives, and achieving collective goals in today’s
interconnected and rapidly evolving world. Communication skills are essential for effectively
expressing ideas, fostering understanding, and building relationships in personal, professional,
and societal contexts.

As per result of the research, it is must to take steps to improve all five innovation skills in
students so that they can be able to create innovation in their field and give their contribution
in developing the country. To developing innovation skills in future generations is a collective
responsibility that involves various stakeholders across society. It is a collective responsibility
of various stakeholders (parents and families; media and communication channels; civil society
and non-governmental organizations (NGOs); industry and employers; teachers and educators;
educational institutions; government and policy makers) across society to create a synergistic
ecosystem that fosters a culture of innovation and equips future generations with the innovation
skills and mindset needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
