NMC Guidelines: Efforts are on to improve the quality of medical education to produce better doctors in the country. National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued notification for the post graduate (PG) i.e. MD (Master in Medicine), MS (Master in Surgery) and super specialty courses DM (Doctorate of Medicine) along with MCh (Master of Chikitsaw) students. Research work has been made mandatory. Online Basic Research Course of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Without completing this course, they will no longer be awarded PG and super specialty degrees.

Basic Research Course Mandatory

From the year 2019-20 onwards, it has become mandatory for the students enrolled in PG and super specialty courses from government and private medical colleges, medical institutions and medical universities to do basic research courses before the final year examination.

Students will be required to do online basic research course of ICMR before passing the final examination of PG and super specialty courses. The NMC has issued a notice on June 7, 2022, making it clear that PG and super specialty students will be awarded degrees only after doing basic research courses. Even if the students pass the final examination of PG and super specialty, they will not get the degree.

The system will change if there is no slot

NMC has also clarified that if the online slot of ICMR is not vacant. In such a situation, the dean of the institute will conduct the course at his own level. Certificates from their level will also be issued to the students who have completed the course. It will be verified by the Inspector of the Post Graduate Medical Education Board of NMC. We will see which students have completed the course.
