NMC regulations: MBBS students need to complete course within 9 years from date of admission

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a notification saying that MBBS studies have to be completed within 9 years from the date of admission. In the ‘Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023’, it has been clarified that only a maximum of four attempts will be available for the first year (First Professional MBBS). No student will be allowed to continue in undergraduate medical course after 9 years from the date of admission in MBBS. Undergraduate Medical Education Board will continue to provide information regarding the rules on the website of NMC. There will also be entry of choice based credit courses in MBBS course. The number of MBBS course seats in the country has crossed 1 lakh.

Medical experts are also in favor of these new regulations. Dr. Arun Gupta, President of Delhi Medical Council, says that admission to MBBS courses is done on the basis of the score of Medical Entrance Test NEET. The condition imposed to complete MBBS in 9 years after admission is reasonable. He says that the total time taken to do MBBS course in India is 5.5 to 6 years. Out of this one has to study for 4.5 years and then do internship in 1 year. After that MBBS course is completed. If for some reason a semester is not completed or the exam is not cleared, the student will have enough chances to reappear. 9 years is enough time.

A student enrolled in a medical course will not complete his MBBS studies until he completes his rotating medical internship as per the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship, 2021.

After MBBS, students who want to do MD, then they enroll in PG courses. There will be a maximum of four attempts to complete the first year.

Choice based credit courses will be entered

It has been said in the notification that in addition to the medical courses taught by the medical colleges and the courses prescribed by their respective universities, choice based credit courses can be started. But the condition here is that choice based credit courses will not affect the medical course. These courses of limited duration can be started. Choice based courses will also be given importance when the medical colleges are evaluated and rated.

Medical Assessment and Rating Board – Ranking of Medical Colleges

Medical colleges will be evaluated and rated by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board. Medical colleges will have to provide all the necessary documents to the board. The rating given by the board will be explained to the public in a simple way and the ratings of all medical colleges will be released on the website of the board and NMC. People will also be able to see the evaluation report.

It is proposed that the National Medical Commission (NMC) may conduct NEET-UG or may nominate any agency or authority to conduct NEET-UG. Admission in MBBS course is done on the basis of NEET UG and the option of common counseling has also been suggested.
