Open Book Exam Good Or Bad ? CBSE Approves This Format For Class 9th From 2026-2027

The move is aimed at encouraging critical thinking, analytical skills, and concept-based learning rather than rote memorisation.

In a major shift from traditional examination methods, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved the introduction of open book assessments for Class 9 students starting from the 2026–27 academic year. The move is aimed at encouraging critical thinking, analytical skills, and concept-based learning rather than rote memorisation.

Under the open book format, students will be allowed to refer to approved textbooks, class notes, or study materials during examinations. CBSE officials said the system will be implemented in phases, beginning with selected subjects, before expanding to more streams.

Education experts believe the approach can make exams more application-oriented and reduce stress levels among students. However, some parents and teachers have expressed concerns that the new system might lead to complacency, with students relying too heavily on materials instead of thorough preparation.

The board will conduct pilot projects and training workshops

The board will conduct pilot projects and training workshops for teachers ahead of the rollout to ensure a smooth transition. CBSE also plans to issue detailed guidelines on permissible materials, exam structure, and evaluation criteria well before the implementation date.

With the debate over whether open book exams promote deeper learning or encourage shortcuts, the new policy is set to spark discussion among educators, students, and parents alike.
