What should be the screen time limit for kids?

In a world full of technologies, everybody is stuck to their devices, be it adults or kids, and the amount of screen time today’s generation consume is way too long. As a fact, too much screen time can lead to a lot of health issues affecting our eyes and mental health, increasing stress & disturbed sleep cycle.

As we all are aware that a lot of screen time issues affect this generation, the kids are at a greater risk. Kids who face more time on the screen can face more health issues. Parents are urged to pay attention to how much screen time kids should be permitted.

Nowadays, kids are exposed to screens at an early age when there’s no need for them to pick up a device. Although there’s no ideal time of how long one should be exposed to a screen, it should be used wisely.

Screen is your angel, not demon

As we all know, everything has a good & bad side. The majority of our elders think of technology/screen as a demon as it destroys our meaningful time into waste. Screens can be one of the best ways to gain knowledge. But the kids are unable to restrain themselves and tend to spend too much time on the screen without gaining meaningful knowledge.

New parents are advised that kids, under the age of 2 should not be exposed to screens at all. American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines (AAP) suggests that from age two to six, kids can view screens to watch high-quality, parent-monitored educational content for up to an hour in a day with breaks.

Quality instead of quantity

As per UNICEF’s recent report, ‘growing up in a connected world,’ states, when considering digital or technological experiences of children, more attention should be paid to what children do online, the content they encounter, and their life environment and support networks in general’Parents need to focus on safe and content-rich screen time rather than just restricting time on the screen.

Being Practical

In a world running totally on technology, new parents at any cost don’t want their kids to be left behind, and keeping your kid away from the screen & technology is not a realistic solution. Instead, the parents should focus on the risks, advantages, and disadvantages of dealing with technology. Parents should teach their children self-control & teach them ‘Digital resilience’. Digital resilience is nothing but the basic understanding of knowing what not to watch and learn from age-appropriate content only.

Developing a tool

The amount of Digital consumption should be divided in two ways. ‘Healthy consumption’ and ‘Unhealthy Consumption’. In ‘Healthy Consumption’ kids should be focused more on watching educational and fitness content for (an hour) and so whereas, in ‘Unhealthy Consumption’ such as social media, smartphones, and video games should be scaled low (less than an hour).
