Exploring Imtiaz Ali's Insight on Bollywood's Survival Amidst Challenges

Imtiaz Ali

Imtiaz Ali, the renowned filmmaker behind hits like “Jab We Met” and “Highway,” recently shared his thoughts on the cyclical nature of pronouncements about Bollywood’s demise, and the industry’s inherent resilience.

The Role of Dreamers

In an interview with DNA India, Ali highlighted his personal experience, stating, “I’ve heard countless times that ‘Bollywood won’t survive.’ When I entered the industry, people said the same about theaters.” He further elaborated by mentioning similar anxieties during the introduction of VCRs and color television, demonstrating that these concerns are not unique to the current digital age.

Attributing cinema’s enduring spirit to passionate individuals, Ali remarked, “People have said many times, ‘Cinema will shut down,’ but that didn’t happen because dreamers like us exist.” He believes that the dedication of those who love watching and creating films is what keeps the magic of storytelling through movies alive.

Imtiaz Ali’s Upcoming Film “Amar Singh Chamkila”

Ali is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film, “Amar Singh Chamkila,” which will premiere on Netflix on April 12th. This biographical drama chronicles the life of the legendary Punjabi singer, Amar Singh Chamkila, often referred to as the “Elvis Presley of Punjab.”

The film stars Diljit Dosanjh as Chamkila, while Parineeti Chopra portrays his wife and singing partner, Amarjot. The movie promises to transport viewers to the vibrant world of Punjabi folk music, specifically the “Akhadaas” (live music performances in villages) where Chamkila’s voice once resonated.

A.R. Rahman composes the music for the film, with lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil. Notably, both Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra contribute their vocals to some of the film’s songs. “Amar Singh Chamkila” is produced by a collaborative effort involving Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films.
