After Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff Seeks Legal Protection for His Personality Rights

Jackie Shroff

Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff has filed a lawsuit to protect his personality and publicity rights. This process involves suing several entities in front of the Delhi High Court. Shroff has taken legal action against these organisations because they have been utilising his voice, photos, name, and nickname “Bhidu” without his permission.

Court Summons Issued

During the hearing, which was chaired by Justice Sanjeev Narula, summonses were sent to the defendant entities included in the lawsuit. The court is planning to take further time to review the case and may issue an interim order.

Misuse of Rights Allegations

According to Shroff’s lawsuit, the defendant entities are using his name, image, voice and persona attributes for commercial gain without getting his consent. Representing Shroff, Advocate Pravin Anand underlined the infringement of publicity and personality rights. He referenced other rulings that upheld the rights of fellow actors Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor.

Trademark Infringement

Anand brought attention to the fact that one of the defendants maintained a restaurant under the name “Bhidu,” which is Shroff’s registered trademark. Some defendants stopped utilising Shroff’s voice and photos in items like ringtones and wallpapers after being given early warning. But because they have no legal defence, anyone who skipped court despite being given advance warning may be subject to injunctions.

Protection of Personality Rights

Anand strongly advocated the protection of personality rights, citing examples of infringement such as the usage of Shroff’s likenesses on unapproved goods like mugs, posters, and T-shirts. He emphasised the need of respecting an individual’s rights by drawing comparisons between the current circumstance and other court cases, especially the Anil Kapoor case.

Defamation Concerns

Anand further expressed worry about the defamatory information that is doing the rounds in the shape of memes and videos that use Shroff’s voice and likeness. He said that the content went beyond what was acceptable and underlined the negative effects it may have on Shroff’s reputation.
