Aishwarya often talks about her father with deep affection. This tribute has become a yearly ritual for the Bachchan family.

When Aishwarya Recalled Her Chaotic Roka With Abhishek Bachchan

Her father’s absence once affected a major moment in her life. In 2007, Abhishek Bachchan proposed to Aishwarya on a balcony in New York. She said yes. The excitement was high, and the news reached home immediately. What followed was sudden and unexpected. In a 2019 interview, Aishwarya said her roka ceremony felt “chaotic” and “surreal” because it happened without any planning, and her father was not even in town.

She remembered it and said, “He proposed, which was amazing! And it happened like really suddenly. I didn’t even know there’s something called a ‘roka’ ceremony. We are South Indians, so I don’t know what a ‘roka’ is, and suddenly there is this call from their house to ours: ‘we are coming’. My dad was out of town, and I had no idea what a ‘roka’ was.”

Aishwarya shared that the Bachchan family arrived soon after. They were emotional and ready to bless the couple. She laughed while recalling the moment and said she was thinking, “Wait, is this our engagement? Is this real?” Her father joined the ceremony through a phone call, and she felt confused but also very happy.

Aishwarya and Abhishek later tied the knot in a close and intimate wedding at the Bachchan residence.

Aishwarya Rai: Work Front
