Akshay Kumar is back in the headlines after fresh reports claimed his long-delayed historical film Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat is still on track and may be released in 2027. The project, based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s era, had earlier sparked speculation about being shelved. But the latest update has now triggered strong reactions online.
Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, the film features Akshay Kumar in the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. While some fans are curious about the big-budget period drama, others have questioned the casting choice and revived comparisons to Akshay’s earlier historical release Samrat Prithviraj.
Akshay Kumar Film Reportedly Nearing Completion
According to fresh industry reports, the film has already completed its shoot and is currently in post-production. A source said to Bollywood Hungama, “The shoot of the film has been successfully completed and right now, post-production is going on. There has indeed been a delay, but a team has been dedicatedly working on the film regularly.”
The insider further added, “Akshay Kumar has shot for the film for 25 days and has poured life into the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Moreover, Mahesh Manjrekar has mounted the film on a grand scale. It has shaped up to be one of the grandest films in Indian cinema.”
Reports also suggest the makers are considering a January 1, 2027 release, though an official announcement is still awaited.
Netizens React To Casting Of Akshay Kumar
Earlier reports about the film being shelved had brought relief to some netizens. But the new update has once again started a debate online. Many users feel Akshay Kumar may not be suitable for another historical role, especially after the poor response to Samrat Prithviraj.
Reacting to the update, one user wrote, “Ye sab type role me akki jamte nhi h aur ye movie chalegi bhi nhi.”
Another commented, “This was better off being shelved. Akki is not the actor for this genre!!”
A third user said, “Please replace him with someone else .”
For the unversed, Akshay Kumar’s Samrat Prithviraj was a big flop at the box office. Many viewers felt Akshay Kumar was not the right choice to play a 26-year-old king. Critics and fans also pointed out that the film lacked strong historical accuracy, had a weak screenplay, and included less impressive action scenes compared to other period dramas.
Another major issue was the fast shooting schedule. Akshay Kumar reportedly completed his part in just 42 to 46 days. This rushed approach led to criticism that the film did not get enough time or effort. He was also trolled for using a fake moustache instead of growing a real one for the role.
The makers and director later also suggested that the film needed more preparation and deeper involvement, which they felt was missing during production.

The multilingual period action film will release in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. It is based on the historic Battle of Nesari, fought on February 24, 1674, where seven brave warriors led by Senapati Prataprao Gujar took on the army of Adilshahi general Bahlol Khan.
