After nearly three weeks of silence marked only by cryptic numbered posts, Amitabh Bachchan returned to social media with an emotional and poetic note in response to Operation Sindoor, India’s swift military retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack.
A Timed Tribute or a Tad Too Late?
In his post written in Hindi, Bachchan recounted the harrowing experience of a woman whose husband was executed by a terrorist while on holiday. Despite her desperate pleas, her husband was shot at point-blank range, and she was left a widow. The terrorist, chillingly, told her, “No! Go and tell ‘...’” - a statement left hauntingly open.
Drawing from a line written by his late father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Big B invoked the grief and strength of the woman:
“Hai chita ki raakh par mein, maangti sindoor duniya” - “With the ashes of the pyre still on me, the world asks me for sindoor.”
This poetic image symbolised the resilience and sacrifice of those left behind after acts of terror. Bachchan then declared: “And then, she was given sindoor - OPERATION SINDOOR.”
He concluded with patriotic slogans: “Jai Hind. Jai Hind ki Sena. Tu na thamega kabhi, tu na mudega kabhi, tu na jhukega kabhi - Agneepath.”
Disappointment Over Delayed Response
His post comes in the wake of the Indian military’s targeted strikes on terror bases in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan, which followed the April 22 Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives, including tourists and civilians.
While many Bollywood celebrities voiced their support for the Indian Army, Bachchan’s silence had drawn curiosity. With this powerful note, he not only paid homage to the victims and their families but also saluted the armed forces in his signature poetic style - one rooted in personal history and national pride.
The post went viral within hours. Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, remains a major moment in India’s counter-terror response, and Bachchan’s words have added a new emotional depth to the public memory of this mission.
Netizens Slam Big B Over Delayed Response and Cryptic Tweets
Despite the emotional nature of his post, many netizens were unimpressed. Several pointed out the timing of the post, questioning why Bachchan remained silent for so long, especially when the entire country was grieving. Others criticised his earlier cryptic numbered tweets calling them “insensitive” and “tone-deaf.”
“He’s a legend, but this isn’t the time for riddles,” one user wrote. Another commented, “Poetry is fine, but where was he when the nation needed voices of strength from icons like him?”
