Asha Bhosle weighs in on healthy competition with Lata Mangeshkar, deets inside

Asha Bhosle: The legendary vocalist Asha Bhosle turns 90 this year on September 8 and will be celebrating her birthday that day. She has discussed her experience as an artist in the profession and how she and her sister Lata Mangeshkar engaged in “healthy competition” in an interview.

In the interview, A music director once phoned Asha Bhosle, believing she had performed one of the songs, and she told the story. In reality, Lata sang it. She said, “I clarified that it was not me but Lata didi and excused myself. That day, I thought that I need to do something different, otherwise, I would not be able to make a mark for myself because Lata didi is already there. I used to watch English films and musicals and tried to incorporate some of those elements into my singing.”

Asha and Lata’s Healthy Competition

Speaking further about their relationship, Asha said that she always expected the twist that her sister would add to the song, which aided in their singing partnership as well. “I always had to anticipate Didi’s singing style when I had to record with her. We both have a propensity of adding a “twist” to the tune. I had to consider what twist she may add and get ready for my own twist. Competition was always beneficial,” she said. About 80 Hindi songs, including Mann Kyu Behka, Main Chali Main Chali, and a number of others, have been sung by the two sisters together.
